MILO MEACHAM / ARCHITECT 

Architecture College Addition -

VPI & State University, Blacksburg, VA:

 

Mr. Meacham served as Associate Partner in Charge of Design for SOM as Design Architect for this addition to the existing College of Architecture Building.  The project was designed in collaboration with Shriver & Holland, Architects who served as Architect of Record for the project.

 

After exhaustive studies for the siting of the new addition, it was concluded that the only solution that would not harm the existing quadrangle was to add the new design studio and ancilliary facilities below the quadrangle, effectively creating an earth sheltered building.  Four large skylights bring natural light down to the design studio and provide architectural elements in the quad which are configured to encourage sitting on the perimeter.

 

In addition to the design studio, the project included a new shipping and receiving area and several shop areas that serve the design studio and the rest of the college.
