Design Philosophy

My approach to architectural design is illustrated in the range of images shown in this website.  I believe that responsible design reflects a careful analysis of the myriad determinants of the context. The viewer will note that the projects illustrated herein are not of one "style".  I am an architect first and not a proponent of a particular style of architecture. The choice of architectural idiom for the composition and "style" of a new work of architecture should ideally grow out ot a thoughtful consideration of many influencing factors including, but not limited to, the opportunities and constraints of the site and its surroundings; the desired characteristics of the spaces as defined in the Owner's program; and, last but not least, the Owner's predelictions.

In the case of additions to historic buildings, the directive from the historic preservation authority, The Secretary of the Interior's Standard for the Treatment of Historic Structures, is that the new element must be "of its own time" to distinguish it from the historical piece. All too often, the design response is for the new to radically contrast the old, frequently resulting in a jarring dis-harmony between the new and old. Surely, the new intervention can be distinguished from the old in more subtle ways that do not create this dis-harmony.

Finally, I believe that, in order to pass on a viable planet to future generations, buildings should be designed to be as sustainable as can be achieved within the limitations of the client's available resources.
