Providence Union Station-
Providence, Rhode Island:

Mr. Meacham served as SOM's Lead Designer for the design of this new train station.  It was determined by the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island that the former station and track was inhibiting the re-development of downtown and asked the Federal Railroad Administration to design a new station on a new alignment that freed up land for new development.

Part of the Northeast Corridor Improvement Project, SOM master planned the new track alignment and new development area in the Capital Center Plan.

The station design takes its cues from the Capital Center plan and its relationship to the Rhode Island State Capitol by McKim, Mead & White.  The station design was recognized with a Progressive Architecture Citation and an AIA Design Award. The station was opened in 1986.
